The University of the Third Age is nationally 26 years old; the Bingham branch was founded in 2000 and now has well over 200 members. Each branch is independent, but can access advice and resources from the parent body. U3A is an organisation for retired people, which promotes "lifelong learning", whatever form this may take. To this end, members set up small local "interest groups", usually meeting fortnightly or monthly; new groups form and disband over time. Costs are kept as low as possible, with many groups meeting in members' homes. Currently there are 17 groups, ranging from Ambling to French to Wine. In addition, each month a talk is given to members by an invited speaker on a variety of topics, followed by refreshments and the opportunity to meet other members.
