Bingham Heritage Trails Association was founded in April 2000 with the aim of raising awareness of the richness of Bingham’s heritage, including the geology, natural and folk history, archaeology and the built heritage. It has been successful in obtaining three grants from the Local Heritage Initiative. It publishes various free leaflets about Bingham and the quarterly newsletter ‘Discovering Bingham’. Free copies of all publications are available from the Library and the Town Office. The web site now averages around 80 visits a day and functions as a resource for schools in the town. BHTA has also established an oral history archive for Bingham and since 2002 has organised a series of free public lectures that have proved extremely popular.
Following a four-year field walking project covering all the arable land in the parish, the association is now on the final stages of an investigation into the ‘History of Settlement’ in the parish. The aim is to make the results available to the public through libraries and schools, as well as adding these data to our web site. The committee has also given an undertaking to support anyone who wants to do any research into Bingham’s heritage and help them publish it. Anyone who has energy and enthusiasm for the town’s heritage can join BHTA; membership costs only £2 a year.
